Professor Kithure Kindiki was sworn in as Deputy President on November 1, 2024. This move followed a court ruling that lifted previous conservatory orders preventing his ascendance to the office.
Kindiki’s swearing-in came after the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, a decision that has sparked mixed reactions across the country, particularly within the Mount Kenya region, where Gachagua holds considerable support.
A middle-aged man from Central Kenya shared his thoughts on Kindiki’s swearing-in, offering insight into the local perspective following Gachagua’s removal. Although he chose to remain anonymous, his remarks captured the sentiments of many in the region who have remained loyal to Gachagua.
The man expressed discontent with the impeachment process and subsequent swearing-in of Kindiki. He emphasized the close connection between the Kikuyu community and Gachagua, whom they view as “one of their own.”
Despite his frustration, the man went ahead and expressed a sense of restraint. He hinted at the strategic patience within the community as he dismissed any notion that the Kikuyu people might resort to protests or demonstrations in response to the recent political changes.
The middle-aged man argued that as a community they are focused on long-term strategies rather than immediate. He argued that the Kikuyu community will bide its time, focusing on the 2027 elections as an opportunity to make their voices heard.
He further asserted that Kindiki, though now Deputy President, does not necessarily overshadow Gachagua in the eyes of Central Kenya voters.
“We are not happy to what you have done to our person but we are not fools the way you think, we are clever. Maybe you thought we will demonstrate but there is nothing that we will do.” The Middle-aged man said.
“We will endure it until 2027. What you have done, Kindiki is also ours but he will be behind Gachagua 2027 and you will know Kikuyus are clever than those others you think of.” He remarked.
“Rigathi, come here, talk to your people and eat well and wait for 2027” the man added.
